An Ode to Avocado Toast

A few years ago, avocados took the world by storm. Their mild, smooth, bright green flesh transformed any dish into the ultimate balanced meal. In turn, with the help of social media, our fascination with avocado toast was unmatched. A pivotal event in my short life occurred when I first added this savory snack to my everyday diet.

As time has gone by, more and more “healthy-ish” food items have been making it on to menus across the globe. Stop by any fresh café in your nearest city and you’ll find turmeric oat milk lattes, fire-roasted tomato sauce over, dare I say it, zoodles, with plant-based parmesan, and some version of a sprouted chickpea-lentil-brown rice-and pea shoot-curried power bowl. With so many truly enticing options, us foodies secretly beg the question, is avocado toast still “cool”?

Worry not, friends. I’m here to say that avocado toast will always prevail over the newest health-food trends that millennials are serving up. Here’s why:

— The richness and creaminess of avocado pair well with bold flavors and contrasting textures. Smashed avocado alone, with a little salt and pepper, of course, acts as the perfect topping for crispy sourdough toast and can be a fun alternative for your typical smooth spreads.

— Not every dish requires a mouthful of antagonistic flavors to make a bold statement. Some of the best meals I’ve had contained ingredients that harmonized together. Avocado has an earthiness to it that melds great with savory additions. I personally like to add both cream cheese and avocado to my breakfast toast because I think the acidic bite from the cheese cuts through the fattiness of the avocado to create a tasteful balance.

— Guacamole, classic cousin to the avocado toast, deserves a mention here. It’s the perfect appetizer, topping, and side accompaniment to any and all Mexican-style meals. It’s also a great example of avocado transformed with fresh ingredients, such as garlic, lime and cilantro. Our avocado toast is safe by association.

— Avocados contain heart-healthy nutrients such as monounsaturated fats, fiber, vitamin C, vitamin K, vitamin E, potassium, B vitamins, and folate. Avocados are additionally praised for their antioxidative properties. I would never go as far as calling something a “superfood”. But with avocados, you’re getting a pretty good bang for your buck.

— They’re also make a great vegan baking substitute if you don’t mind some earthy undertones. When compared with butter, shortening, margarine, cream cheese, and vegetable oil, avocados contain the least number of calories, total grams of fat, grams of saturated fat, milligrams of cholesterol, and milligrams of sodium.

I’m the type of eater who will find a new combination of foods and eat it every day for weeks and then never touch it again after I’ve had enough. However, I’ve always managed to find my way back to avocado toast, probably because it can be dressed up in so many different ways. Whether you love trying new recipes or refuse to top your snack with anything besides Trader Joes’ Everything But the Bagel Seasoning, I support you! Keep munching on your avo toast, fellow foodies. I promise you’re still trendy.
