Adopt a Hostel During COVID-19

As you can probably imagine, I’m a huge proponent for hostel living for backpackers, especially when traveling solo. Hostels provide a comforting sense of community and security for travelers during a time full of exiting new experiences and uncertainty. Plus, let’s not forget—hostels are a great bang for your buck, especially if they offer free breakfast.

Due to the COVID-19 crisis, the travel industry as a whole is experiencing a huge shock due to a massive decline in visitor volume. I know hotels and airlines are greatly impacted by a complete halt in tourism. What I failed to realize is that hostels are feeling the same repercussions of a global pandemic and, unfortunately, they aren’t part of the ‘big business’ club that will eventually get a government bailout in attempt to keep our global economy afloat. What makes it even worse is that these hostels charge their guests a fraction of the price compared to hotels—which is what attracts young travelers in the first place—so they’re already working with a much smaller budget. These small businesses have been closed for weeks, meaning they have absolutely no income, yet they still have to pay their loyal staff and fees associated with rent. And as we all know, the smaller the income means the smaller the safety cushion.

It didn’t even cross my mind until I received an email from Goodmorning Solo Traveler Hostel in Lisbon, Portugal. Lisbon will forever be one of my favorite destinations because of Goodmorning Hostel. After weeks of traveling on my own, I met four amazing girls who reminded me what it was like to spend time with best friends, even if it was just for a few days. What hostels do for young travelers is unmatched.

All hostels need support right now, which is why I want to spread the word about the #adoptahostel campaign. Uncertain times are ahead of us and these hostels are asking for financial support to try and reopen their doors after this is over. Please consider helping in any way you can!

How to help:

  1. Purchase a gift card for a future stay. Check out their directory to see if your favorite hostels are participating.

  2. Donate. If you’re unsure of your future travel plans, you can opt to donate to the hostels of your choosing.

  3. Spread the word. Adopt A Hostel is on Instagram! If you can’t help financially, share, share, share!

Let’s try and keep the hostel community alive!
